Building resilient communities in a changing climate

The Climate Resilient Communities Fund supports projects that help Northland’s most affected communities withstand our changing climate.

Community organisations can apply for between $5,000 plus GST and $40,000 plus GST for projects that build resilience in Te Taitokerau.

Funding is available for projects that:

• Build capacity and scale-up regional resilience initiatives, raise awareness, and strengthen local connections and participation in action.
• Support programmes that drive transformational change for community and tangata whenua climate resilience. 
• Take action under one or more of four priority impact areas: Food resilience (Te Kai); Water resilience (Te Wai); Energy resilience (Te Ngao); Nature-based Resilience (Te Taiao).

Prioritising investment in a resilient and thriving Te Taitokerau

Building resilient communities in a changing climate is a priority for Northland Regional Council. Our communities need to be well prepared for the challenges a changing climate brings and the hazards our region faces.

Floods, droughts and severe weather disrupt our lives, damage our homes and community infrastructure, impact our wellbeing, and make it harder to maintain a reliable food, water, and energy supply. Being resilient isn’t just about bouncing back from these events, but also about growing and getting better at dealing with future challenges.

We can do this by focusing on local needs and community-led solutions that will help our communities thrive into the future.

Northland Regional Council will invest $9.2 million over 10 years into projects that build community capacity and drive transformational change for community and tangata whenua climate resilience. 

What type of mahi does this fund support

Funding is available for projects that:

• Build capacity and scale-up regional initiatives.
• Educate, raise awareness, and encourage participation in resilience actions around Te Taitokerau.
• Strengthen local connections, collaboration and relationship building for enduring partnerships.
• Create plans and programmes to drive transformational change for community and tangata whenua climate resilience.
• Take action under one or more of four priority impact areas: Food resilience (Te Kai); Water resilience (Te Wai); Energy resilience (Te Ngao); Nature-based Resilience (Te Taiao).  

Who is eligible to apply

Applications to the Climate Resilient Communities Fund must be for projects within Te Taitokerau and can be from:

• Community or neighbourhood groups
• Tāngata whenua (hapū or iwi groups/marae committees)
• Social enterprises and not-for-profit businesses
• education providers

Applicants must be based in Te Taitokerau / Northland, and the proposed project must be implemented within this region. Applicants must either be a legal entity registered in New Zealand (i.e. be an incorporated society, charitable trust, a not-for-profit limited liability company, etc). If your organisation is not a legal entity, you may partner with an appropriate organisation that does have legal status. GST registration is not a requirement.

What funding is available 

• Groups can apply for up to a maximum of $40,000 plus GST per application.
• The minimum amount for project funding is $5,000 plus GST.
• The total value of funding available this financial year is $600,000.

Successful applications will make some form of contribution to the project, which may include other funding through a co-funding arrangement, or an in-kind contribution of goods or services.

November 2024 - Applicants notified of outcome
