Types of Solar Systems

Solar systems come in three main types: on-grid (grid-tied), off-grid, and hybrid. Each system operates differently, influencing the equipment needed, installation process, and overall costs and savings.

Selecting the right solar system depends on your energy needs and goals. As your trusted Northland solar experts, we can assist you in choosing the best solution for your needs.

On-grid solar systems

On-grid solar systems are connected to the utility power grid, allowing homeowners to use both solar energy produced by their solar system and electricity from the grid. When solar panels produce more power than needed, the excess is sent back to the grid. Utility companies measure this surplus energy and credit it back, further reducing future electricity costs.

On-grid systems are a popular choice due to their affordability and high return on investment, especially in regions with higher energy costs such as Northland. Since they require less equipment than off-grid or hybrid setups, they are more cost-effective. However, one drawback is that they do not provide backup power during outages, as they rely on the grid to function.

Hybrid solar system

Hybrid solar systems combine the advantages of both grid-tied and off-grid solar setups; they connect solar panels to both batteries and the utility grid. These systems are often called “solar-plus-storage” systems.

Solar-plus-storage systems are particularly popular in areas with frequent grid outages or where export is not available. Without a battery, solar panels can’t power your home during a power outage. Batteries allow you to reduce reliance on the grid by storing excess energy when solar production is low, which also helps maximize the use of clean energy in your home.

Off-grid solar system

An off-grid solar system is a solar panel setup that operates independently from the utility grid. To power a home off the grid, you need solar panels, a large amount of battery storage, and often an additional backup power source, such as a generator.

Also known as standalone systems, off-grid solar setups are commonly used by homeowners in areas without grid access, such as remote cabins or rural locations.

In fact, many places across the country still lack utility grid service, and off-grid systems provide a way for these remote areas to access electricity. Being off-grid also offers greater self-sufficiency, as you are not dependent on a utility company, and you control your own power supply.

However, off-grid systems are costly. A significant amount of battery storage is required to power a home without relying on the grid, which drives up the price. Living off-grid also requires adjusting your lifestyle to be more energy-conscious, as you don’t have unlimited access to power. Off-grid homeowners must carefully monitor their energy use and solar production to ensure they have enough electricity to meet their needs.
